today we picked up the keys to our new apartment. I had spent an hour or so loading the car and the whole way to the new place I wondered if it would really be ready to move into. Last time we were there I didn't think there was a chance! But they gave us the key (well, 'gave' isn't the right word, we had to pay a $50 key fee and only got one key so we'll get to spend a bit more getting a duplicate). Anyway, we were successful in getting the key and went to our apartment. It smells horrible because of floor varnish. At least I'm hoping that is what it is and that the smell will dissipate. Otherwise I'm not going to be happy as whatever it was made my eyes burn badly. Not so badly that I couldn't see, however. And what did I see? Bugs. Bugs. Bugs. I also noticed shards of galss on the countertop, dirt on the floor and a filthy bathtub. Mostly I noticed BUGS. Jeremy scooped some up in an envelope and we took them to the office. He casually opened the envelope and asked the assistant manager if she knew what kind of bugs were living in our apartment and if she had some idea of how we could get rid of them. "Termites!" she shouts and tosses the envelope in her waste basket. ummm, paper is made of wood. The termites might think they've been invited to a picnic. Maybe she oughta kill them before throwing them out. Just a thought. And I know nothing about termites. Maybe they don't like 'processed food' and will only eat real wood. I don't know. I don't even really care. Except if what they are eating is my apartment!! Then I care. Lucky for us there are 2 door to the apartment so we unloaded the car through the kitchen door. We left with promises of an exterminator within the day. Went to the storage unit and loaded the car up once again with shelves and kitchenware and by the time we were back at the apartment the bugs had been removed. At least we no longer saw any. Not a real bright beginning to this new apartment.
